I'm wondering if that author was somehow confused about where he was.

Potes to Panes on N-621 looks like a fine road but the real hairpins are farther south-west on N-621. Some of them are just visible at the bottom of this picture (likely the "hairpin strewn section burned into his memory").

There is also some radical hairpins on route Ca-282 that joins N-621 where
    I have labeled "intersection".

I would assume that the picture was taken at that intersection from Ca-282 looking out at N-621.

I think you're dead right, Andy.

I bought a large scale map of the region, and plan to take that 621 right down to Riano, to take in that bit of road you're talking about. Stay the night there, and then spoilt for choice

I think that I would go to Panes from the ferry.

Then do the roads along the border of the Park.....As-114 to the west.

    And then....N-625 south to Riano.

The next day do N-621 to that pictured "intersection" then

follow Ca-182 to its end and turn right on Ca-280 and go south to the junction of Ca-183.

Take that road through Reinosa then continue east to Bilbao.

    Oooo I can't wait for Sept 2010.

Hey Owl, why don't you just tell Ogre where we're going, how long we've got, and ask him to suggest routes? What's the point in having friends if you can't pick their brains?

    Ha!

I was thinking that 170 miles or so in mountains was worth 3 or 4 hundred of motorways - and they'll want to keep stopping and taking pictures.

And I'll guarantee that at least 1 will need a new tyre along the way.

And they'll have a hangover every morning.

Andy once said to me he didnt a fugk about the secenary, just give him fast roads! I was quite happy in the USA on my hardley checking out the sights (in between the vibrations of the engine)

and your quite right Tom, with the reprobrates on the list thus far I think 170miles per day will be pushing it. We've got a one-man-bacon-eating machine from the home of scouse, and not to mention the entire uk AA failures coming as well

and you havent factored in conflicting GPS readouts and the envitable "shotgun" approach to getting to each destination
    Regards,

You're right about the scenery or other sight-seeing activities............but I don't think I said "fast" roads.

Fast roads are straight roads and they are boring.

"Good" roads for me are smooth but full of turns so that even trying to go the speed limit is a challenge. :P :P :P

Looks like plenty of "good" roads on this trip

Hmmmmmmmmm, My Spain (see map below) needs some color.
