I just did a pricing of the ferry . Sharing a 4 berth cabin and travelling with a motorbike $540 return.

Winter is a lot cheaper, but the weather can be ordinary.Especially on the West Coast.isn't that right Ruzzle?

I am thinking the 27th Feb 2011 departing Melbourne and departing Devonport (Tassie) to sail to Melbourne on the 5th March or a day later if we all want to go on the Gordon River Cruise at Strahan for the day?

is looking good. There is a public holiday the following Monday in Tassie, making it a long weekend ,which might make it a bugger with extra tourists on the road.
How do those dates sound ?
Probably not a lot of time for sight seeing ,except from the saddle, so if folk want to see a bit more of Tassie, maybe they can stay on a bit longer than the Salvo?
