    Can't believe my luck

I fully intended to retire during the second week in January, and told my boss that I would be handing in my notice on 11th December.

Last week I received an email from my regional manager telling me that I was going to be made redundant on 31st December.

    Talk about a result!

I expected the usual card signed by people I hardly knew, and then I would fade away with a gentle wave, now they have to pay me 6 months salary .

Nice one Tom, well done. I did the same when I left Northern Rock. Said I wanted to resign, then got tipped the wink that there were (yet more) redundancies planned, so hung about a few more months and got a stack load of cash to go! Mind you, taxpayers picked up the bill.

Timing is everything, it seems, Geoff.

Mine was more pure blind luck.

    Excellent news, Tom!
My older brother hung around for years waiting to made redundant in the communications field. He worked for 3 or 4 different companies without ever leaving his desk, while others fell around him. Finally this spring he got the axe.
As it turned out if I could have waited another year or so I would have gotten damn near a year's salary when they shut the doors. Still glad I went when I did.
Hope you like retirement, Tom, it's not much as I expected and has been an adjustment.
A good long ride can transport me from where I am to who I am.

    Some truth in that.

The only downside is that my redundancy payment will be based on the amount of hours worked from October to the end of December.

Guess who's working his balls off right now?

    Ding! Ding! Ding!

You have won the bonus round, Tom. No doubt it is well-deserved.

    Congrats!
